What happens to my service during the porting process (downtime)?
Short answer
In most cases, there is little to no downtime during a number port. There may be a short interruption—usually just a few minutes—while the number switches between providers.
What to expect during the port
-
Your existing number stays active with your old provider until the port completes
-
On the port date, the number transfers automatically
-
Calls may briefly drop while the switch takes place
This interruption is typically very short and resolves on its own.
Will my service stop working?
No.
-
Your service remains set up and ready
-
If your service is already live, it may continue using a temporary number until the port completes
-
Once the port finishes, your number routes through the new service automatically
How to reduce disruption
To minimise any impact:
-
Keep your old service active until the port is confirmed complete
-
Avoid making major changes on the port day
-
Let your team know there may be a brief interruption

Reassurance
Short interruptions during porting are normal and expected. They do not mean your service has failed or that the port was unsuccessful.
