Are charges pro-rated, recurring, or one-off?

Short answer

Charges can be recurring, one-off, or pro-rated depending on the service and when it starts, changes, or ends, including when a service is cancelled or terminated during a billing period.

Charge types explained

Recurring charges

Recurring charges are regular charges billed monthly or annually for ongoing services.

If a service is cancelled partway through a billing period, you may still see:

  • A final recurring charge covering the remaining notice period, or

  • A partial recurring charge if your service ends mid-cycle.

This depends on your contract terms and notice period.

One-off charges

One-off charges are single charges applied once, such as:

  • Setup or installation fees

  • Adjustments or corrections

  • Early termination charges (if applicable under your contract)

If you cancel your service before the end of your minimum term, an early termination charge may appear as a one-off item on your final invoice.

Pro-rated charges

Pro-rated charges apply when a service starts, changes, or ends partway through a billing period.

When cancelling or terminating a service, pro-rated charges may appear to:

  • Charge for service used up to the termination date

  • Adjust previously billed amounts

  • Reflect changes made during the final billing period

It’s common to see pro-rated charges alongside other charge types on a final invoice.

How to identify charge types on your invoice

You can usually identify charge types by:

  • Reviewing the line item description

  • Checking the billing period dates shown on the invoice

  • Looking for wording such as pro-rated, adjustment, or termination

  • Comparing the charge with previous invoices

Your final invoice may look different from earlier invoices due to these adjustments.

What to expect on a final invoice

When a service is cancelled or terminated, your final invoice may include:

  • Pro-rated charges for part of a billing period

  • Any remaining recurring charges during your notice period

  • One-off charges, such as early termination fees (if applicable)

  • Credits or adjustments where relevant

Seeing multiple charge types on the same invoice is normal during service changes or cancellations.
